The European State of the Climate: An open Arctic, why does it matter for Europe?

On 22 April 2021, Earth Day, the EU-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service, published its European State of the Climate report. This report is an easy-to-understand snapshot of Europe’s climate in 2020 and the global context, including analysis of notable climatic events over the 12-month period.

It is already no secret that the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe and experienced record temperatures in 2020, and so it is perhaps no surprise that Europe’s Siberian Arctic featured in the report.

In this event we ask what the consequences of a warming Arctic are for Europe, its economy, and its policymakers, and whether our cities, towns, villages, industries are equipped for the impact environmental change will bring. We explore how open earth observation data and the accompanying science can support the European Green Deal’s ambitions for a sustainable economy and carbon neutrality in Europe by 2050, and how it can also inform decision-making across all societal sectors – from energy to water, health and security – to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
